Rearchitectured classroom for skill building and mentoring around attendance constraints

The Challenge

Variable student attendance and sudden shift to remote learning during COVID caused continuity gaps and made traditional instruction/assessment unsustainable.

Goal & Objectives

  • Create a scalable, self-serve learning model resilient to disruption
  • Replace product-focused grading with process/skills-based tracking
  • Automate visibility and reporting for learners and stakeholders
  • Maintain access and progress when district LMS failed at scale

My Role & Approach

Led full rearchitecture without formal authority: mapped pain points (attendance, LMS failure), designed flipped/project-based model, built automated tracking in spreadsheets, deployed standalone class site, and iterated based on real-time feedback and outcomes.

Key Deliverables

  • Flipped learning system with automated spreadsheet tracking
  • 12-factor longitudinal skills assessment rubric and reporting
  • Standalone class website for assignment access and submissions
  • Open-ended project environment emphasizing iteration and autonomy

Results & Impact

  • Replaced traditional grading with automated, 12-factor skills-based assessment system and longitudinal reporting
  • Built standalone class website to ensure continuity during district LMS failure at scale
  • Enabled scalable, self-serve learning under variable attendance and connectivity constraints
  • Increased learner autonomy and reduced administrative drag

Key Learnings

Constraint-driven environments force true systems thinking; self-serve tooling and automated visibility are critical for scalability; longitudinal metrics reveal real impact over time.

Tools & Technologies

Microsoft 365, Square (previously Weebly web publishing), spreadsheet automation, basic HTML/CSS for class site

Collaboration Highlights

Worked with students (end-users) to iterate UX and processes; reported progress to school stakeholders; adapted rapidly during district-wide tech failure.
